Regular readers of this blog may have previously come across references to and extracts from Daily Edventures, Anthony Salcito’s blog that tells the stories of his various encounters and conversations with those he calls ‘global heroes in education’.

The use of gaming as a medium to expose young learners to new concepts and ideas, and through which they develop new skills, is something that is becoming increasingly commonplace in schools all over the world. Stephen Reid is seen as a real innovator in the field of games-based learning, and his organisation, Immersive Minds, works with clients to bring technologies like podcasting, animation, filmmaking, mobile and tablet, coding, games and games-based learning to the forefront of educational thinking and practice.

We were privileged enough to have Stephen join us earlier this year at BETT 2016, where he spoke daily in the Microsoft Theatre (to capacity audiences), all about his use of Minecraft as a teaching medium.

“Minecraft is easily the most flexible, creative and engaging classroom tool of this century.”

Anthony Salcito recently caught up with Stephen to talk about games-based learning, his own experiences, and to tackle the broader topic of education innovation. You can read the full write-up on Daily Edventures, and learn more about Stephen’s use of a variety of creative gaming scenarios for the purposes of education, including his latest project, designed to help students understand the European refugee crisis:

“I teach today in honor of teachers everywhere who have ever given a moment, and the right words, to change a child’s life.” Stephen Reid, Scotland
